Below is a letter sent by NYWAG to all NYCC Councillors – do you want to write to them?
We thought it would be helpful for you to make an informed decision about the NYCC Waste Strategy Plan if we issued a number of fact sheets relating to the proposed Amey Cespa plant for North Yorkshire
FACT SHEET 1 – What exactly is it?
In their publicity NYCC and Amey Cespa refer to this huge industrial waste site as a:
Waste Recovery Park or Waste Recycling plant.
These are benign PR misnomers to fool the public and, we suspect, most councillors. Its real function is as a waste incineration plant. Why do we say that? Please look at the following facts.
The plant will process 320,000 tonnes of municipal waste per year broken down as follows:
270,000 tonnes of that will be incinerated
This includes most of the output from the 40,000 tonne capacity anaerobic digester (AD)
Only 20,000 tonnes of the total waste handled by Amey Cespa will actually be recycled
This means that an astonishing 85% of the waste handled at this huge plant will be incinerated – 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
As recycling improves in North Yorkshire and the municipal waste therefore reduces, Amey Cespa say that they will keep the incinerator going by taking in commercial waste. How is it possible that the PFI is being used to subsidise an additional commercial waste operation?
So now you know that as a North Yorkshire County Councillor or City of York Councillor you will be condemning North Yorkshire to the already outdated method of incineration for 25 years or more if you vote for this plan on
We hope this information has been helpful and thank you for taking the time to read it.
